QUIP Software

The QUIP System is a suite of programs designed originally for cleaning, recoding and tabulating survey data, but powerful and versatile enough to provide a powerful tool for verifying, manipulating or analyzing nearly any kind of data that is stored in, or can be exported to, a flat file.

QUIP software was designed to meet the needs of data processing professionals in the most demanding production environments and easily handles data that other tabulation programs and integrated survey packages cannot.

The programs in the QUIP System share a powerful logical specification language, are entirely script-driven and run from a command prompt. Modular spec files, substitution dictionaries and command-line parameter passing make them ideal for batch processing or as data handling engines that can be called from customized environments.

Combining a concise and easily mastered language for expressing complex logical relationships with the speed of processing large flat file data sets, QUIP software provides a fast and cost-effective alternative to SQL-based solutions for cleaning many databases.

The components of the QUIP System are available separately or as a complete package. They are:

QTAB is a cross-tabulation program with extensive annotation and formatting capabilities and a full language for manipulating table components after the data have been tabulated.

QGEN provides extensive capabilities for manipulating and cleaning data in fixed field flat files, including validity checking, recodes and conversions, with the ability to extract or merge data from multiple files.  It comes with QMARG for obtaining marginal counts and frequency distributions, with options for selective filtering and weighting, and a full-screen column-binary data editor.

QBAL is a sample balancing program that uses Deming's Iterative Proportional Fitting (IPF) method to weight data on multiple variables simultaneously for large data sets.
