System Requirements

All QUIP programs run from a command prompt under Windows 95/98/NT/2000.  Minimum system requirements are a 386-class processor and 32 MB of RAM.  The entire QUIP System occupies less than 2 MB of disk space.

QUIP System programs are compiled in C using 32-bit code and use no external libraries or run-time modules, resulting in compact executables and extremely fast operation.

QUIP programs are optimized for floating point operations and run faster on CPUs with good hardware floating point support, such as Intel 486/DX and Pentium processors.

A version for DOS 5.0+ using the DOS4GW 32-bit DOS extender may still be obtained on request, but is no longer actively supported, and some newer features will not work.

Please inquire about porting to other operating systems.

Other Recommendations

QUIP specifications may be written with any editor that can create files with no embedded tab characters or formatting codes. Most notepad or word processing software can do this, but a good programmer's editor will greatly improve any spec writer's efficiency. KEDIT for Windows from Mansfield Software is particularly well suited to working with text blocks and tabular files and highly recommended.

When QGEN is used for sequence checking, carrying or cumulating information across records or merging data from different sources, the data must usually be arranged in a specific order. A reliable sort program will be needed by most users to do this. We recommend OpTech Sort, from Opt-Tech Data Processing.

For sharing data with database programs like FoxPro or Access, or statistical programs like SPSS or SAS, we recommend DBMS/Copy Plus from Conceptual Software.
